Early years and history

On the 7th Paush of the 1328th year of Bengal, at 6:12 a.m., before sunrise, Sri Sri Maa Annapurna illuminated the lap of Bindubasini and Vasant Chattopadhyay in the holy land of Balijuri. The young Bindubasini had been destined to be the mother of the divine soul – she had earlier been indoctrinated (dikkhito) by Bholanath Brahmachari, a well-known seer from Kashi.

Annapurna lost her mother at a young age and grew up under the guardianship of her elder brother Shri Bajrangalal Chatterjee and his wife. She was inclined towards making clay idols of Hindu gods and goddesses, worshipping them with flowers and water. Versed in the Hindu scriptures of Ramayana, Mahabharata and Upanishads, the little girl showed her dividend spark from a young age.

As was the tradition in those days she was married off at an early age. But her husband soon departed for his heavenly abode and the Kumari Annapurna dedicated her life to the worship of Kali.

Her elder brother helped her establish the Basanta Kali ashram in the year <>. Annapurna emerged as the karunamoyee maa, devoted to the worship of Kali and the service of the poor.
